The majority of this herd—14 out of 16—came to us from kill pens. Some had already passed through auctions, their individuality overlooked. Others stood on the brink of being discarded. But now—look at them. Each one carries a story, and every step they take across this land speaks of what’s possible when care replaces fear, and connection replaces survival. They arrived in varied states. Some thin and withdrawn. Others unsure of human touch. Some had shut down, conserving themselves the only way they knew how. A few were just foals—learning the world from inside the chaos of a feedlot. Now, they live in rhythm with the land. They graze, they play, they nap in the sun. Their bodies grow stronger, their curiosity returns, and their spirit becomes visible again. We meet each one with patience and presence—offering nourishment, medical care, healthy social dynamics, and the freedom to be exactly who they are. Out here in the sage steppe of Eastern Oregon, the land grows differently. Unlike irrigated pastures that grow fast and thick with outside inputs, our rangeland is made up of native bunchgrasses—slow-growing, drought-resilient, and deeply attuned to the rhythms of this high desert. They grow in clumps, leaving room for wildflowers, wildlife, and water to move through the soil. It’s a landscape shaped by resilience. These grasses evolved alongside roaming herds of wild herbivores. They thrive when grazed briefly, then left to rest—a rhythm we hope to restore through regenerative grazing. With intentional herd movement, we can mimic nature’s pattern: nourishing the land, building soil, and supporting biodiversity. We are in the process of developing this model—not just for ourselves, but as a vision for how equine sanctuaries and operations might care for horses and land together. It requires extensive cross-fencing, a dedicated team, and a shift in how we think about stewardship. But we believe it’s possible—and necessary. Even with this system in place, our land will never feed our herds year-round. At most, it can provide 40% of their forage for a few months each summer. That’s why we feed hay year-round. At feeding time, Shasta is always first to the line, the mules close behind, trying to sneak a bite before the black mustangs—Kalie, Jupiter, and Beauty—claim their space. In winter, this one herd of 17 eats 3.5 large bales per week (1,100 lbs each). By July, when the grasses are mature and can handle light grazing, we’ll scale back to 1.5–2 bales per week—but the land will only ever supplement, not replace, their diet.
